I see three different types of skirts in Cranach's paintings: square and pleated (very common), trapezoidal gores and pleated (also very common), and circular/gored and not pleated. As you say, this third option is the least common, but it is also the way the skirts were done on the only extant version of this dress, Mary of Hungary's Gown.

I do my "Kampfrau" dresses square and pleated and my Cranach gown is trapezoidal gores and pleated. You can really see the difference in the way the skirt hangs, especially near the hem.
