Chainse progress

I have now sewn in the smocked gores in my new 12th century chainse and have started to fell the seams. So now I "only" need to fell the side seams and hem the narrow sleeves and the bottom hem. The neck opening, which is just a straight slit that widens slightly at the shoulder seams is almost finished, I have 15 centimetres or so to do. I tried it on yesterday. It is such a nice linen quality in a lovely light pink colour. And it feels and looks so good. The gores are a little lower than I usually set them and don't start until the hips, which is more practical when you are going to have a tight bliaut over it. And it gives me such a nice shape. I looked in the mirror yesterday and felt so sexy (!) Being involved in medieval groups and making medieval clothes gives you a very warped sense of what is sexy, one that differs considerably from the contemporary view on the subject.

The first time I really noticed [livejournal.com profile] melaniesuzanne she was in vails and I think a sideless 14th century dress. So I know what you mean about a warped sense of what sexy is. It just goes to prove you don't have to be wearing dental floss to look sexy.

*nod* I'm a firm believer of the "more is more" school of thought in sexiness.

What was *so* sexy about Medieval - and later, Renaissance clothing is that it leaves SO much to the imagination. When a gentleman can't even see the color of a woman's hair, due to the veils/headgear she's wearing... and then catches a stray wisp or tendril brushing the side of her face... THAT'S sexy. :)

The contemporary view of what is sexy is pretty warped in itself. A six-foot-tall woman who is too emaciated to function sexually and has baseballs sewn into her chest, wearing, as Yorkshirelad said, dental floss...
