Tired and grey weather

That's the only explanation I can give to me falling asleep with Aileen Ribeiro's Fashion and fiction. Dress in art and literature in Stuart England. I am in great need of strong tea.

That's a great book, isn't it?

Yes and no. I am very much in disagreement with her statement that clothes of the 17th century were so badly made that they hardly fit the body (p 5). I am also a bit concerned that she either doesn't know that "Holland" is not only a province in the Netherlands but also a type of linen fabric or just ignores it (p49).
But there is some very interesting stuff too.

Oh - that's not good. I have just had time to look at the pictures, like a little kid!

I've only looked at the pictures too :)

But, uh, that's just weird. Both things, plus the other you posted about!

I gasped when I read that part. I had to double and triple read it when I read the book, I thought it was a mistake. I don't think she document her view on it either. But yeah, the book in general is very good, an interesting topic, well researched and lots of nice photos. The latter is something I always deeply appreciate, as pictures DO in fact tell me more than words.

No joke. I was just thinking of going back to sleep this morning, but then the alarm went off.
