Saturday the plan was to a) buy fabric in Shepherd's Bush and b) meet up with [livejournal.com profile] billyoblivionx, who I, as you might recall missed seeing last time I was in London due to a stop on the District Line on Putney Bridg. To avoid anything like that happening again I hade decided to start the day in Shepherd's Bush, rather close to Ladbroke Grove, where he lives. Little did I know that the London transport system is conspiring against me actually meeting him.

On our way to Shepherd's Bush we tried a new way: The London Overground from Clapham Junction (a stop on the train from Wimbledon to Waterloo). That was fun and convenient, but led to us missing the important information that the Hammersmith&City Line is closed over the summer. The Overground stops at the other Shepherd's Bush station, the one which is used also by the Central Line. That station quite far from the station on the Hammersmith&City Line, now renamed to "Shepherd's Bush Market" (and completely rebuilt, all the old charm gone and a no doubt highly efficient steel monster in its place). But we walked down Shepherd's Bush Green to the market and all the fabric stores next to it. Since I nowadays make modern clothing too I was mainly looking for nice cotton and rayon prints, unlike all the other times when silk has been my primary focus.

These two fabrics, a purple wool that will become a 16th century jacket for Valeria and a printed and waxed cotton that I don't know yet what to do with was bought in another store, before we reached our goal: Classic Textiles on Goldhawk Road.

In Classic textiles itself I got two lovely blouse weight cottons which probably will be turned into summer dresses:

I also got three nylon slips from one of the stalls at the market (for some reason very hared to get hold of in Sweden) and we had donut peaches before heading for the tube and our meeting with Billy O.
Goldhawk Road station was closed. OK, we thought, we'll take the tube from Shepherd's Bush market, on the other end of said market. But of course that station was closed too, since the whole line is closed. A quick survey of buses showed that there was only one to Ladbroke Grove tube station and that it of course left from the Shepherd's Bush station, quite a bit to walk from where we were. When we got there a bus must just have ledft because we had to wait for over ten minutes, somethign very rare in the more central parts of London in the middle of the day. In the end we were ten minutes late to Ladbroke Grove, but Billy was still there waiting for us.

Billy then showed us the market, which we were too tired to appreciate so after Valeria and I had an ice cream we went to his place for tea and chatting. Broken only by a short excursion to get lebanese take away that chatting got on until 8 pm and we had a splendid time. At least Valeria and I had, and it seemed that Billy was too. Definitely something that I want to repeat.

When we got "home" to Wimbledon (bus, train, tram) Teddy and Tom were home from there re-enactment and we were all a bit to tired for socializing. Not that we didn't try, but since we were going to spend Sunday until 2.30 pm at their place we didn't feel too bad about going to bed early.

PS: The council is trying to demolish both the Shephed's Bush Market and the houses where the fabric stores are, including Classic Textiles - there's a facebook group protesting against it here.

I can't stand the suspense any longer: did you or did you not go to Sunday Up Market in Spitalfields?

We went home on Sunday afternoon, so we spent the morning "at home" in Wimbledon, socializing with our hosts.

I still haven't managed to get to this shopping street, but perhaps when I go to London for summer holidays. Did you happen to see any burgundy or purple broderie anglaise? (I know one usually doesn't see what one isn't looking for .) )

I did see dark blue, but I can't remember seeing any purple or brugundy. But then I was looking for white with a motif that I liked so I probably wouldn't have noticed any purple.

Perhaps there is some hope :)

It is hard to find any interesting colours (not pastel), even black has disappeared here, and it is hard to dye since it is not 100% cotton. And I really want that nice scalloped edge to make ruffles from.
