And I have pictures to prove it.
Especially [livejournal.com profile] sarahbellem should take notice of how little boning there is in it and use it to smack people who claim large women can't use cable ties in their corsets. _Especially_ if they say "real women", thereby implying that smaller women aren't real women.

Thank you. I'm very small chested, but I don't think that makes me less "real" than you or any other woman.

Wow, looks great, and so do you!

Thanks for the comment on cable ties for the well endowed - it gives me faith that my future bodices will turn out at least half as good as yours :)

There is a vocabulary issue here, I think.

1) Obese women call themselves large.
2) Women who are on the large side of normal, but who are not obese, think of themselves as much bigger than they are, and call themselves fat.
3) Women who are between fashionably slim and medically "overweight" want to lose weight.
4) Women who are of the dimensions that fashion has dictated, think they are normal, when they are actually medically underweight.

Average size for American women nowadays is a size 14 (American).
Average size for American women when I was a teenager was a size 14 (American).
The size 14 from when I was a teenager is the same size as a current size 8, and corresponds to the pattern size 14.
Women who take a store-sized 14 take a pattern size 22.

My beloved [livejournal.com profile] aeddie brought home some 175-lb. tensile strength 48" cable ties today. I am going to try to make a corset with them, and will let you all know whether someone who isn't of normal, healthy dimensions can manage with a cable tie corset. I'm in the 275-280 lb. (125-130 kg.) range. Anyone under about 225 lbs. I don't consider to be of the dimensions that cause me concern about cable ties.

I'll let you know.

Eva, you are beautiful.

Looks lovely! Do you have event to wear this one, or do you do them just for fun?

I never used cable ties- the combination of not knowing exactly what it is in Swedish, and because I have a good and cheap source for boning anyway.

*hugs*

Det svenska ordet är buntband. Jag köper mina på Claes Ohlsson. Vad använder du?

Thank you Mary for your insightful comment. On a medical scale I am more than overweight, having passed into "fetma" as they say in swedish, which maybe is translated as obesity? Anyway, what comes after overweight on the BMI-scale.
You, who are bigger than I am will need more cable ties, but for I think an effigy corset wholly boned with sturdy cable ties would work for anybody, no matter what size.

Tack!

Having met you in person now, I have to say that you don't *look* overweight (though in photos you look taller than you are in real life...{g})

As to that kirtle - you rock.

they always pick the worst words for it, though. Fedme, fetma, obesity ... doesn't sound nice at all, - I think It is because of the long eeee-sounds.

It looks really good. I would guess we are a similar size (although my breasts are smaller than yours *sigh* (the things I post on the internet!!)) and I also find cableties absolutely fine. Use the same number, in the same pattern, as you, in fact.

Ho hum. Better get back to the sewing.

Very pretty! Can you wear your old effigy or is that now too big?

My effigy is narrow cane with only 4 steels and I would not call myself very thin!

However, I would not call YOU obese or even fat either!

My effigy is too big. I'm thinking about selling it.

Can you not bring it in? Or split the back to put in a back lacing?

Date: 2005-05-21 01:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] frualeydis.livejournal.com
I probably could, but I feel that it wouldn't be worth the trouble. I also need to take it in only in the waist, because my chest measurement hasn't gotten smaller. So then I can't just cut off some in the front and make new lacing holes, but have to take away shaped parts and that is complicated with all the boning.
What I _want_ to do is to find a source for reeds and make a new, totally hand sewn.

Eva
