I spent most of last evening trying out a pattern for a 1850s bonnet in paper. I think I have got it almost right now. So I went downtown at 9.30 to go to Knapp-Carlsson (the haberdasher in town) to get buckram and what do you know? They were closed due to illness! That's never happened to me before. Very annoying, since you can't find buckram anywhere else. I guess I will have to finish my chainse and maybe start on Rickard's half-circle cloak instead and make a new try on monday. I did however buy five pairs of knitting needles at the Salvation army as well as some fabric flowers to put on both this bonnet and coming hat projects. I also went to GÄrda textil, which is an expensive fabric store, but the only one with any decent variety and quality in town. They have lovely, lovely silk. Even blue satin. It was a little bit too thin and in a very bright blue colour however. Eventually I ended up with a light grayish blue taffeta that is also too thin, but was so beautiful that I couldn't pass it. So I will have a corset in very light blue taffeta and will have to stabilize the taffeta somehow. Now I only need to order a busk, u-tips and maybe some boning. And start making a mock-up of course.
Next weekend maybe.
After shopping I was home for maybe a quarter of an hour before we went to Vendela's riding school. Lots of walking today, I can feel it in my foot.

So, I couldn't get any buckram. Well, historically at least, buckram is linen drenched in glue. So I took some medium linen, not really coarse, but too coarse for shifts in my opinion, and put it in a mixture of water and the kind of glue you use when you glue wooden things together (for indoors use, so it's water soluble). Lots of glue, not so much water. Then I dried it and ironed it when it was not quite dry. It turned out stiff, but not stiff enough so I'm going to cut out two of every piece and glue them together with the same glue. It will probably need the night to dry, but I'm looking forward to see how it works.
