Medieval Africa is a really interesting book. It's not easy to read, because of all the names and because the assume that you have detailed knowledge of islamic history, which I don't, but it's really interesting. I'm reading about the empire of Mali right now and I really look forward to get a better context for my (limited) knowledge about early modern Hausaland (in Nigeria).
This book covers 1250-1800 and I have ordered up Africa in the Iron Age, which covers the period 500 BC to 1250, from the library too.
