sewing and stuff
Aug. 18th, 2007 10:50 pmDespite being extremely tired, tired enough that I had to take a nap before dinner, as sure sign of much rheumatic activity in the body, I got some sewing done on my gown based on the finds from grave 31 in Uvdal church, Norway. I am not making a new interpretation; I'm using Marianne Vedeler's interpretation. The find is not easy to interpret, the gown is still on the well preserved skeleton and the layers can't be taken a part, so she's used CT-scanning to see how they look. I think in this case I'll rely on the professional who's actually worked with the garments.
She hasn't, AFAIK, sewn a reconstruction though, so I'm working from her drawings.
Today I made a working mock-up for the "bodice" and gathered one of the front pieces of the "skirt". It's 64 cm wide and I sewed 23 rows of gathering stitches, 1 cm apart. The back piece is of course double that width. Right now the gathers are pulled together tightly and will rest like that for a couple of days. That's how you do it with folk costume skirts, so I thought I'd do it like that now too.
