Silk velvet
Jan. 29th, 2006 03:29 pmThis summer, when I visited
myladyswardrobe she showed me a piece of real silk velvet, with the pile made from silk that she had. It was an antique. It was made for furniture, so the bottom weave was rather stiff, but it was real silk velvet and lovely all the same. Well anyway, I had a piece of similar upholstery velvet in turquoise, with a beige back weave, about 60 inches square. I always presumed it was synthetic and thought it too stiff to use for costumes anyway (it's stiffer than Bess'), the colour of the bottom weave shines through a little much for my taste too. But the colour really is nice and I thought about making a hat from some of it, the stiffness wouldn't be a problem then. So today, on a whim, I made a burn test from some of the pile and to my amazement I smelled that tell tale foul smell of burnt silk. The bottom weave burnt fast and had no smell, so I guess it's cotton.
So now I feel that I have to think more about what to make from it.
