So I lied...

First a small coif and then a wired coif and a strip of fabric wound around the head. It doesn't look exactly like the Holbein sketch. For one, the "flaps" reach to far on the cheeks and it should be closer to the hairline in front. I think I can fix it though. Maybe some tucks and by having my braids wound around my head instead of in a bun at the neck. I don't want to shorten them, because there's wire in there and that would mean more work ;) But probably I need to do that and make them smaller and rounder. Darn!


With the bonnet on top. It bothers me that the bonnet is the colour of unbleached wool and the coifs are white. I will either have to live with it or find some solution. It's not as yellow as in the photo though.


The shape of the coif. The inner coif has a straight front because I wanted to keep the beautiful hand woven selvedge. As for the outer coif I would probably have made it with a straight edge if it wasn't for the Anne Boleyn sketch, because most of the other pictures look like they could be achieved with just wiring a straight edge.

Very cool, despite the minor adjustments you mention. I also note the portrait appears to have a chin strap through the sides and apparently fairly tight under her chin. You're definitely very close!
I shouldn't be worried about the color of the bonnet. it looks truly spiff as it is.

Dye the bonnet perhaps? I've got dye for a million balls of sock yarn, a bonnet won't make much difference. Just an idea, if you decide different whites are too -88 :-D

Wow, those turned out great!

On the hairline: I haven't noticed before, but you seem to have a slight 'widow's peak' which Anne Boleyn lacks. Meaning that you may have to accept a bit more hair showing than the Holbein sketch.

There are some sort of laces through the flaps on the Holbein sketch. Any idea what those are? I have an idea of sorts that it's a chin strap, but I'm probably way off...

Yes, I have a widow's peak. I've always liked it.
You are now the second person that says that the things on the flaps are laces, I have problems seeing what they are, but maybe you're right. Drea leed has another theory (http://costume.dm.net/headwear/coif.html), btu I'm not convinced. The thing is, a wired coif doesn't need a chin strap, it stays on anyway. The under coif could use one though. But of course, if I put my braids around my head I can pin the coif to them.

The question is whether the coif really is wired, or if it's merely several layers of starched linen. It looks fairly thick and stiff to my eyes, which wiring doesn't really achieve. However, the laces are much too far up and to the back of the head for a chin strap - it would be really uncomfortable. Besides, we can't see anything of the strap itself unless the line drawn around her chin is where it cuts into her skin (ouch).

Lunch sounds fine - I am getting tired of the fat-laden food they serve around here, so something slightly more healthy would be welcome. Tomorrow?

I have class this evening, but it doesn't end until 9pm-ish, which really is too late to stop by.

I'm rather convinced that the edge of the coif is wired, if you look at it you see the outline of the wire. It would also be very hard to achieve the shape of this and certainly of some veils without wiring them. It is also documented.

The lunch food at the univerity is quite good. I will just have to remember to bring money. Tomorrow then? At noon?
