More fabric
Nov. 8th, 2006 10:54 pmWe went to another town to buy fabric today (BorĂ¥s) at a factory outlet (mainly, we visited some other shops too).
I bought 17 metres of very thin worsted 100% wool in dark navy. To be used for duvey covers for the whole family, for camping. Cotton, and linen especially, absorbs moisture and damp bed clothes isn't very nice and actually bad for your health when you have arthritis. Wool (and silk) on the other hand repels moisture and is excellent in beds. Wool sheets are mentioned in swedish medieval laws. I presume they were woollens and not worsteds, but at least wool sheets are period; even if duvey covers aren't. I already have wool sheets and I love them.
I also bought 3 metres of very thin worsted 100% wool in pale lemon-ish yellow, for a Herjolfsnes dress for Vendela. I already have black wool of the same quality for a dress for Valeria (they got to decide themselves)
In addition to that I bought 4 metres of navy/burgundy plaid in 60 % wool/40 % poly, for a modern project for me.
I also got myself 3,5 metres of thin dark brown worsted 100 % wool. In reality it turned out more like 4,5 metres, but I only paid for 3,5.
I don't know what to make from it. Either something middle class from the 16th century: english, dutch/flemish or german.
Or a dress from the Maciejowski Bible. There are lots of brown dresses there. But I have a lot fo 13th-early 14th century dresses already.
Or it could become something from the second half of the 15th century. It is absolutely lovely anyway.
I also got 5 metres of thin linen twill to be used for shifts for Vendela and Valeria.
So, lots of new fabric.

If you'd like to I could bring my german 16th century images on an USB-stick, I have no idea how many you might have but I might have some new for you. Or I could burn them on a CD for you if that is the better option.

Date: 2006-11-09 07:44 am (UTC)Actually, wollen duvet covers is just what I need for our forest cabin. It gets quite damp, especially the first night. Except for summer, I bring my wollen nightdress, but why not woolen bedthings as well.
It has been ok before, but the last time we were there, the cotton bedlinen (which was stored there in a wooden chest) had developed a funny smell, which wouldn't go out in the wash. So from now on we'll need to bring bedlinen from home, it was decided. Perhaps I could be "decadent" and invest in silk bedlinen for summer :)
