A meme I got from [livejournal.com profile] seamstrix.
It was hard, not many song titles begin with an M. Not in any particular order.

1. The Beautiful South: "Mini-correct".
A very good band who made melodious pop songs with intelligent lyrics. I especially like that the songs are mostly sung both by a man and a woman, and in dialogue. This one is no exception, the text is very witty and is about a man telling about his sex life and how he's treating women really badly and she's reproaching him from the position of a lover "left with a baby and disease". It doesn't sound funny, but the text is really, really good

2. The Lemonheads: "My drug buddy".
The only Lemonheads song that begins with an M. And since I love everything with the Lemonheads... Actually, it's a very good song in itself and it was lovely hearing the audience singing it back to them when they were playing here in November.

3. The Church: "Magician among the spirits".
The church has made many catchy pop tunes, like "Unguarded moment", but this is not one of those. It's like ten minutes long and very dreamy and meditative. Especially live it draws you in, deeper, and deeper, to an almost trance-like state.

4. Sator: "Machine gun justice (a love song)".
One of the best songs from the really, really awesome album "Stock Rocker Nuts" from 1992. The cool thing is that their latest album, "Basement Noise" from last spring is every bit as good, maybe even better. Surf rock, hard rock and punk in a perfect mix.

5. The Wannadies: "My Hometown".
The first song I heard with the Wannadies, back in 1990 or so, on the sadly deceased radio show "Bommen". It's beautiful and melancholic and a wonderful pop song about growing up and being young in a small town. A couple of years later came their much harder and absolutely brilliant big hit album "Bagsy me".

6. De Stijl: "Modern".
Not my favourite on the album, but since I love the whole album (Details) it belongs here. De Stijl is a swedish band who plays a sort of 80s influenced pop with influences both from punk and syntheziser based music.

7. Hanoi Rocks: "Million miles away".
So, it's banal, it's a glam rock ballad...and it's absolutely wonderful. Sad, poetic and sung with lots of feeling. Stay away from live versions though, they are generally very bad.

8. Caesar's Palace (now, for copyright reasons, only Caesar's):"Mine all of the time".
Catchy sixties influenced pop with lyrics that you identify with and songs that makes you want to dance. What's not to like? The whole album, called "Love for the streets" is really, really good.

9. Sisters of Mercy: "Marian".
Is there anybody from my generation who doesn't love this one? Dark, mysterious and beautiful.

10. The wedding present: "My favourite dress":
One of the best british guitar based pop bands of the 80s. And with an album titled "George Best", could it be other than brilliant? This is just one of the 23 great songs on the reprinted CD version. The singer later formed "the Ukrainians" who's rocky versions of russian folk songs are well worth exploring too. "The wedding present" made a new album a year ago or so and it's very different, but also very good.
