Status report, 5 days old
May. 17th, 2004 07:41 pmHaving survived the awful 20 hours between friday night and saturday evening everything is now settling down. That was the time when she was crying all the time she wasn't sucking violently on my breasts. It probably was a combination of hunger, since the milk hadn't started to flow properly then and belly ache because of trying to get rid of the meconium. After that she got much calmer and now that she can get as much milk as she wants (every second hour or so seems to be the preference) she's either sleeping or eating. My nipples are very sore because she didn't have the correct "grip", but it's getting better. She still has problem with gas, but it's much better. I don't sleep nearly enough of course, but it's okay as long as I don't try to do anything or see people.
Today we went to the hospital for the medical examination of her. They took a blood sample, weighed her and checked that everything was alright. She now weighs 3950 grams, which is 40 less than when she was born, but 30 more than when we left the hospital when she was one day old (I'll tell you about the birth later. The reason she was born in the hospital after all is that when the water broke it was very green. She had her umbilical cord wrapped tightly around her neck and the stress probably made her shit in the water). Anyway, of course she's well and absolutely perfect.
she just woke, and since it's very hard to write while holding her I end here.

Date: 2004-05-17 11:44 am (UTC)My son had the cord wrapped around his neck and he inhaled meconium and had to stay in the hospital for a week. So I can imagine what must have been going through your head!
Take it easy, sweetling. I'm so happy for you.

Date: 2004-05-17 12:53 pm (UTC)Katherine put me through 2.5 weeks of labor (yes, weeks) and had apgars of 5 at 1 minute and 1 at 5 minutes, and at 6 minutes, 9. I think she just had a mind of her own, and decided, right after we started to panic, that it was ok to live. Bratchild. She had a knot in her cord and it was wrapped 3x around her neck. She is not only fine, she's splendid. We joked about her being a dancer long before she was born.
