Thank all gods for the Jesus and Mary Chain, for Teeange Fanclub, for New Order, etc, etc - they force me to enjoy life even when I have to read about the First World War, it's really the most depressing topic in the world: all that slaughter, and for what?

for wrath, for ruin... no, wait... oh, that's right, to end all wars, wasn't it?

Sarcasm aside, a lot of good things (in my eyes) did come out of it but it was pretty much all unintentional, and those in command would probably have been appalled by most of them - social and racial changes, economical and political upheaval here in New Zealand for example. The changes may have come about anyway, but they would almost certainly have taken much longer than they did. Was that worth the cost? I didn't pay the price, I'm just reaping the benefits that were bought in blood.

And that was my philosophical moment for the week...

Exactly - lots of good things that weren't intended. But on the other hand other good things were probably forver crushed with those millions of young men.

If I may, it brought both good and bad. Commerical air travel as we know it would not have developed as it did. Aircraft entered 1913 little better than the Wright Flyer, and by 1919 Alcock and Brown crossed the Atlantic in a Vickers Vimy, a converted bomber.

Of course, it made the world perhaps more accepting of mass casualties in warfare then it had been previously. Couple this with the fallout from the Treaty of Versailles, later economic instability and a weak League of Nations and you get World War II.

At least on the bright side of that, that war truly did end the concept of total war, at least for now. Nations with nuclear weapons cannot be defeated, they can only be destroyed, taking everything with them.

Of course that assumes only sane, intelligent nations get nukes, not crazy individuals....

Got any other good music to throw on the CD player? I'm getting scared now.
