It was a very good party, but public transport to my home was apparently non-existent at half past twelve, so I ended walking quite a long way. (For the locals: Axel Dahlströms torg till Marklandsgatan och det går ingen direkt väg så det är en bit, samt från Chalmers och hem.) It was a good thing I decided not to bring the sword.

On a side note, a friend of a friend went to a fancy dress ball a small town. Being a WW1 re-enactor he was dressed as an Aussie digger (soldier) and being pissed he decided to walk home. Through the foggy night car slowed down but didn't stop as they passed him.

For years a story ran in the town that the ghost of a killed soldier was seen on the roads, trying to make his way home.....

On the contrary, bringing the sword would have been only natural. Possibly slightly hard to explain ("Well, officer, these three men tried to commit suicide by assaulting me. Two of them appear to have succeded, come to think of it."), but much safer.

Riding last train home with a sword is special.

But it would have been rather awkward when I climbed over hills and through small woods - it's big and heavy.

Just imagine you're on your way to Russia to fight Peter the Great and call it research. :-)

I do have a serious question though. What type of sword is that and is it "real" or a modern replica? Thanks.

Modern decorative thingy, probably from Spain - I've inherited from Gotvik's old, old, old seneschal: Estrid Tyrheim, if you remember her.

Ahh, not a good sword then, I gather. Your comment further down indicates "Spanish wall-hanger"; those are not worth carrying around.

Uh, nope, can't say that I've ever met Ms. Estrid. I'm from Canada, living in India, and I've never been to Sweden.* I found your blog via Sarahbellem and Myladyswardrobe, and just wanted to know if it was a special Swedish type sword or a modern replica. I've been roaming the internet researching sword fighting for a story or two, and the photo caught my eye, thats all.

*Not that I would ever knock Sweden. It would be a neat place to visit, and your national hockey teams are right up there with Canada in terms of overall talent.

Excellent story. We once marched past a psychiatric ward in full Roman gear. I really, really hope no one was looking out a window :-/

That wasn't me, was it? I nearly caused an accident one night after a WW2 themed party, approx '99-2000 in Christchurch, NZ, where I went in full WW1 kiwi officer's field kit and apologised for being late. While walking home pissed and still in character-ish mood, I fairly naturally fell into step, it being the more comfortable way to walk in the officers getup I was in, and while passing through a relatively dark, tree overhung portion of Clyde road, moonlit but with dramatic shadows, the passengers of a car passing lit me up with their headlights momentarily, marching along , swerved badly, but when they recovered, I'd already nipped around the corner, into legend, apparently.

Thnaks. It's a little on the tight side, but, as I said, I have hopes that this will correct itself during spring.
