The final day Valeria and I went to the Imperial War Museum (and I cried all the time while we were there). In the shop I found this book by Mike Brown, which turned out to be a real treasure:

It is, among others, aimed towards re-eneactors and thus gives you lots of help to make your forties look more authentic. Of course, it deals with british circumstances, which means that people from the US which didn't have the same rationing and didn't suffer from such deprivation and need as the UK and the other war-torn European countries will have to bear that in mind while reading. The same, though to a lesser extent is the case for Sweden. There is also of course some culture specific info.

I am seriously considering buying his book on re-creating the 50s look too.

I was going to say alos that it doesn't give a total fashion overview, since you're probably supposed to know that already, but is concerned with getting the foundations, hair, details etc right, just like we do for the Middle Ages.

I have been wondering what a fellow sewist/seamstress/costumer actually thought about these two books. Since I trust your opinion, I shall go ahead and search these two books out as well. I take it from other posts there's problems getting the 50s-related book here in the USA?

That looks like a fun book!

Digression: I remember our history teacher in school actually told us there was no rationing in the UK during or after the war! I knew he was wrong, dad lived there after all. We must have had bad teachers: Another one did deny that it was possible to do liver transplants. In 1988!
