Why wasn't I prepared?

As long as I can remember my greatest fear regarding relations with other people has been that once they get to know me and see how I really am they won't like me anymore.
So if I have felt this for, maybe 27 years, why wasn't I prepared when it actually, finally happened?

Well, there are probably quite a lot of persons who don't like me, but this is the first time it happened that someone really liked me for three months and then decided that he didn't.

I guess if it's the first time at your age, it could be quite a shock. I've become accustomed over the years to being disliked by quite a number of people!

I'd say it's because you're not used to it. It's hard to prepare for something when you don't have first hand knowledge of what it's like.

But then, if it hasn't happened for all those years, why have I been so afraid of it?
And why had it have to be someone that I cared so much about?

Eva, you are a wonderful person. You don't have to go changing to please other people. You have many friends who like you just the way you are. Enjoy them. Life is too short to worry about the people who just don't get you.

Question the first: poor self-esteem? Or as noted below, you're human and you want to be loved, just like everybody else does.
Question the second: one doesn't really react when it's people one doesn't care much about.
