My daughters are off to a party

Today Vendela and Valeria finished their tenth year of compulsory school. In autumn they start different high schools, studying very different things. And tonight they're on a party given by the school and won't be home until one o'clock.



They are the best daughters one could have and I'm so proud of them.

Is "Vendela" a very common name in Sweden?

No, not that common, but not uncommon enough to be really weird either. It was more common three generations ago. Valeria, on the other hand, is very uncommon.

In Spanish we have the word "véndela" and it means "sell her", so to me it sounds very weird haha. That said, here in Mexico we actually had a cartoon back in the 90's that was like a talk show and the host was supposed to be a stereotypical Swedish supermodel, so she was blonde and named Vendela after Vendela Kirsebom. They just pronounced it ven-DE-la. How do you pronounce it?

And Valeria is actually REALLY common here in Mexico City. Chilangos (people from Mexico City) really like sophisticated-sounding names like Regina, Valeria, Valentina, Cristina, etc.

By the way, is Vendela the one in white? Because she looks SO MUCH like you! Even in the way she's posing and everything.

No, I put the names in wrong order, Valeria is the one wearing white. And Vendela is pronounced with the emphasis on DE like you wrote above. It means "woman from Vendland", which is a part of the Baltic sea south coast.
