When the most effective painkiller you have also is a potent downer it is hard to find any energy or enthusiasm for work.

It doesn't help to get an e-mail from a student who you e-mailed a month ago and who never answered, where she complains that you're hard to get in contact with.

Thank you! It got much better actually - I took a book out, bought a sandwich and sat/lie in the sun for two and a half hours reading.

Thank you, the sun and the realisation that I am allowed to read at work made the day much better. I have now read peter Burke's classic "Popular culture in early mdoern Europe" for two hours in the sun. Though not very concentrated all the time ;)

And it really is a lovely summer solstice day.

It sucks when students assume teachers don't have a life. I know because both my parents are professors, and sometimes it's like their students think they are cryogenically frozen every night, not out there living their lives, dealing with health issues, and raising kids.
