Sometimes, as someone with a chronic disease you just do stupid things, such as answering "Fine", when someone asks how you are. What you really should say instead is: "Normal for me", because that's what you really mean. Because "fine" you probably haven't experienced in decades, and have no idea how that actually would feel.

I am not back to normal for me, but I have some hope that it will happen eventually.

I hope you do get back to normal for you, and then I hope that you get better than that, too. Because if it is worth hoping, it is worth hoping for even better.

I'm sorry you can't honestly answer, but cut yourself some slack! It's not stupid to answer "fine," it just means you don't want to deal with people getting all up in your business and having to explain your pain for the umpteenth time, likely to someone who's not very close to you. It's okay to just say fine and move on. It's what they want to hear, the social greeting word dance. (Unless it is someone very close to you or your doctor, but I don't think that's what you're talking about?) I hope you are feeling better today!

I agree. When it's the cashier at a store/market, 'fine' is acceptable. But when it's someone close - like one of your friends - it's different. Chances are they knor your history and are asking because they want an honest answer.

I really like this idea of 'normal for me'. That makes so much sense.
