There is some stupid trouble with uploading stuff on the account that has the first page, the costume gallery etc, hopefully it will sort itself out. Anyhow, thanks to my darling husband who's been taking care of kids and household this evening, there is now a page on the green bliaut. Hopefully you can see it, or else I will kill myself, or Comhem my internet provider.

Beautiful. Now I really want fabric I can use for a bliaut project. I'll get a proper bliaut in the end - it may take me years, but I WILL have one in the end.

Oh yes, I wanted to know, what does your sleeve pattern look like?

I plan to draw a pattern and go over to my friend Anna and scan it so it can be on the page. To explain it in writing it is the "normal" straight sleeves with a gusset and then I added triangles on both sides of the straight piece to make wide sleeves.

Thankfully they don't take that much time and doesn't use too much fabric. I used 5 metres of 1 metre wide fabric. So you can make one, or a hundred.

Wow. My favourite part is how the sleeves show off the fabric and trim.

Wow. That is lovely.

FWIW I've achieved that exact same shade of pink on linen using madder with an alum mordant. It faded to something more apricoty, but it started off exactly that colour. Mind, I live in a very hard water area, but it is doable.

I am fascinated by the smocked gores. How hard were they to do?

Thank you for the information on madder. I was thinking that you could get that colour by overdyeing woad and madder, since woad at least dyes linen well. The smocked gores were very easy to do, although if you look at them closely you see thar only the two rows at the bottom are properly honeycomb smocked. I had forgotten the principle, so the upper rows are just decorative stitches on top of the gathers.

I've just hooked out the madder-dyed linen and it hasn't gone apricoty. My memory was playing tricks! It's stayed that true pink, just a lot paler.

If you'd like, I can gladly send you a snippet. I know people are cautious about giving out their addresses to strangers so, if you'd rather not, I won't be in the slightest bit offended. My email is emilie@shipoffools.com, if you'd like.

Best,

Peronel.

also bazil wood soaked in a deluted soluton of pottash will produce that pink hue. (an experience made during pigment making and straining bazil wood through a piece of linen...)
