As usual on mondays I feel bored and unproductive. I've read the paper for today's seminar and put some figures in Excel, on material in clothing divided into three periods 1215-1339, 1340-1389 and 1390-1500. I'm trying to figure out a way to show it graphically, but the figures are so disparate so it might not contribute much and it would be better just to make some general remarks. Anyway, I'm just going ot use it for the conclusion in my chapter about how Scandinavian clothing changed between 1215 and 1500. There will be a separate chapter on material too, where not only material in clothes but also fabric that is willed is included.
But I feel hot, achy and tired and really want to go down town to buy black wool cloth for the guards on my black dress instead. But if you don't work also when you're not inspired you will never finish anything, so back to my figures!

I'm awake and bored, so at least your post was something interesting for me.

So when is your book going to be available for the rest of us to read. Course it probably won't be in English but oh well.

The "disputation" (I don't know if that word is used that way in english, but when I present and defend my dissertation) is planned to be around March next year or so. Hopefully I will find a publisher for my book, but as you said it will only be in swedish. But after the disputation I will probably try to sell it to an english/american publisher so it can get translated. I have no idea how to go about that, but that's a later problem.

If you are verbally presenting/defending your dissertation it is a Viva Voce (as [livejournal.com profile] myralea said).

If its just the bit that introduces it and is written thats the abstract. Would be nice to get an English translation.

Would you translate it?

"But I feel hot, achy and tired..."
Hope you are not getting flu or anything! Thankfully its a been a while since we met up so you can't have caught anything from me!!! ;-)
Whatever I have is sure making me miserable! Roll on 4pm!

Bess.

There will be a public defence where a doctor within reasonably the same field critizes it and I defend it. So Viva Voce is the correct term, nice to know.

Who translates it (if somebody wants to publish it) would be up for negotation I think. But I would have to do a lot of the translation myself to make sure the technical stuff is right. And since I'm probably unemplyed anyway after it's finished I really should do it.

As for the illness I think it's just the "normal" arthritis. But I don't like it anyway.

Oo! Public! In that its in front of LOTS of other people??? *Bess quakes!* I'd be terrified even if I knew my subject!

Pity you couldn't get paid for translating it!!

Poor you with arthritis! My Dad has that quite badly!

*faint*

*Bess picks herself up off the floor*

I really admire you for that. Don't think academia in the UK has Vivas as bad as that!!!

When will that be?

Bess.

Probably in the beginning of marchnext year. Now I'm not nervous at all, but I will be. But not for the people, but that the dissertation won't be good enough.

Well if you have that long you have time to prepare for it! But I am sure the dissertation is fine.

Viva voce is probably the proper term; out here it's called thesis or dissertation defense (UC Riverside). My mom quivered like nervous jello for three months prior to hers and passed with flying colors.

I'm absolutely sure you will come through just fine.

Duh. I obviously ought to look at the other comments first. Sorry!

Mondays are the worst day of the weeks, IMO. And I've been rehearsing for my upcoming unemployment with doing housewifey stuff all morning. Just one more load of washing and the I can go and fiddle with my sewing with a good consience.
