The event I went to is called St. Egon and is supposed to be the feast of the fictionary saint Egon, who among other things protects us from fish rain. It was really, really nice.
We went to another of Gotvik's (the local SCA group) events last year, the Autumn Feast and didn't really have fun. For us, who are used to Nordrike events it felt strange that people had plastic bags and beer cans visible during the day and talked about mundane things all the time. There was also so many musicians there that you couldn't hear what people said during the feast and since we came in the morning and left after the banquet we never really got to know anybody. I was however willing to give it another try and had the theory that if I came on friday and stayed the whole event I would actually get to know some new people and enjoy it more. I was right, even though I had to leave during the feast because Maja didn't enjoy it at all then. I got to know the people I knew a little before better and I got to meet and talk to interesting new people. I am also very impressed by the dedication and work of the members of Gotvik to make this possible. The food was excellent, there was four workshops, a backgammon tournament and the feast decorations were stunning, with pasty castles filled with flowers on the table.
Among the "new" people I got to talk to were Eira, who has started a music group in Gotvik and who also gave a good workshop on renaissance music. Since we sing medieval and renaissance music we had a lot to talk about. The Prince and Princess of Nordmark were also very nice new aquaintances. They have a very high level of authenticity and since that's something I'm very much into too it was really nice meeting them. The princess had a gorgeous Gothic fitted dress in cream wool with wool buttons, all hand sewn and somehow she managed not to get it dirty and the Prince had really nice 15th century clothes, probably all hand sewn. And pattens, which I'm very envious of with the wet weather we've been having recently. During the banquet the princess had a 16th century gown in cream damask that also looked very good on her.
The King and Queen of Drachenwald are people I've known long and are both _very_ nice and charming, so of course their presence made it a more fun event too. The queen is the person who taught me how to make wool buttons that look good, for which I am eternally grateful.
And everybody loved Maja and helped with watching her and entertaining her.
Anyway, I hope it is clear how impressed I am by the organizers. It was a themed event, set in 16th century Flanders, and almost all the women from Gotvik had variants of the "flemish working woman's dress" in wool and their hair either covered or braided and wrapped around the head.
Hopefully there will be pictures to be seen later at their site.
