My grandmother died tonight
Dec. 3rd, 2004 11:15 amTonight my paternal grandmother (swedish is so much simpler; it's "mormor" for the maternal grandmother and "farmor" for the paternal grandmother) died. She was 83 years old. Even though I haven't had as much contact with her lately as with mormor (who died the 27th of October last year), or ever was as close, she was a vital part of my childhood and youth and a really wonderful person. She and my mother still had contact, even though my mum and dad got divorced in 1972 and for example she came when my half sister finished high school even if they weren't related. I'm so glad that mum and I went to see her and show her Maja two months ago. By then she had been ill for over a year, with some illness that made it impossible to speak. But she wrote notes and was awake and clear in her head. Then three weeks ago, around her birthday she got much worse and was taken to the hospital. My father called to tell me and he was crying. He was at work, they were supposed to go see him later today after work, but she died at four in the morning. I asked if he was going to leave work, but he was meeting a client later today and he said that as long as he didn't talk about it it was okay.
Now my last grandparent is gone. Farfar (paternal grandfather) died in 1998 and morfar ten years earlier, mormor last year and now farmor. It feels odd, they were all such vital people.
I heard Maja sneezing and waking so I'd better go.
