1. What is your favorite fabric? - Very hard, right now I'm having a love affair with silk taffeta, but usually medium weight fulled, shiny wool. Or thin soft drapey wool. OK, wool.
2. Best pattern you have ever used? - Drea Leed's article on the effigy corset and a 1760s corset from Corsets and crinolines have been very good. As well as the diagrams on the Herjolfsnes finds. Or are we talking actual commercial patterns here? Then I don't use any.
3. If you had to choose to make a dress from either the 16th century or 18th century which would you choose and why? - 16th century. I have done several, I like the style better than the 18th century and I have somewhere to wear them.
4. Last costume book you purchased? - Historical fashion in detail. The 17th and 18th centuries
5. Do you prefer hand sewing or machine sewing? - Hand sewing, unless it's tents. The machine sewing is just something you hurry with so you can do the wonderful, soothing hand sewing.
6. What type of sewing machine do you own? - Husqvarna 2000. Lovely sturdy machine from the early 70s.
7. If you were given a choice to visit a museum to study costumes, what country and museum would you choose? - The Abbegg Foundation in Switzerland.
6. Favorite costume designer---before 1945? - Worth I guess, most of the clothes I like were made before the concept of designer was invented.
7. Do you prefer working with silk or velvet? - Silk. It's used for more periods. I like velvet a lot too but it's such a pain to sew!!
8. Cotton or Wool? - Wool.
9. If given the opportunity to be taught the craft of costuming by a costume designer from any era, who would it be? - Someone who made bliauts. We have no preserved examples and I would love to know how they actually were made and from what materials.
10. Silk thread or Linen thread? - Linen for linen and heavy wool, silk for silk and thinner wool.
11. Given the choice would you choose to learn the art of dyeing fabric (natural or chemical) or the art of draping? - I'm going to learn both hopefully. We're going to do natural dyeing in march an done day I will own a dress stand. But preferably? Natural dyeing.
12. What is your dream dress? - Too many dresses, I can't choose.
13. Arnold or Hunnisett? - Arnold, always Arnold.
14. What costume drama would you prefer to have worked on? - That's too hard. I can't decide whether I would have worked on a good one to enjoy it or a disastrous one so that I could have saved it.
15. Favorite Queen? - Desiree (Desideria) of Sweden
16. If you could own only one costuming book, which would it be? - Queen Elizabeth's wardrobe unlock'd. All the others I can get through the library, but QEWU I can only get on ILL and then I can't move it out of the library. And I do own it.
17. If you could only choose one embellishment for your gown, what would you choose? - Real vair.
18. Feathers or fur? - Fur, vair or white fur.
19. Green or Red? - Currently green
20. Assuming you own more than one vintage garment. Which piece would you donate to a costume museum? - I used to own a late 19th century bodice (found in a garbage container) in silk velvet, but this was in the days when I really wasn't interested in clothes other than for wearing and it was very, very small so I gave it to a very small friend. I have no idea where it is now.
21. What is the most comfortable - corset/stays/set or bodies you have worn? - My effigy corset. It's a wonder of comfort.
22. Embroidery or Tatting? - Embroidery
23. Lord of the Rings or Star Wars? - Lord of the Rings.
24. Favorite Costume Drama Actress? - Cate Blanchett in "Elizabeth"
25. What was the last Costume you made and why? - A pair of drawers for a coming victorian costume. Before that a new corset. The last dress was green silk bliaut that I'm going to wear on the next event I go to in March.
26. Last costume drama DVD you purchased? - "War and Peace" with Audrey Hepburn.
27. What type of music do you listen to while sewing? - Anything I like at the moment.
28. What inspires you to create a ensemble? - fabric, art, preserved clothing, literary descriptions, all mixed together.
