A finished bodice
Nov. 6th, 2005 06:47 pmDespite all good resolutions not to start on my first Tudor dress I started on it yesterday. Or rather on the kirtle that will go under the gown. First I washed some rose-coloured wool that I had bought for a mundane project. It's from Saxylle and their woollens can usually be washed at 40 degrees C (For those who don't know centigrade:The body temperature is 37 degrees C) since they are from worsted yarn and quite densely woven. This one was looser and had a slightly creped yarn so it fulled and shrunk quite a lot, 20 cm on the width and maybe 70 cm on the length. So my initial plan of making a full circle skirt was scrapped and I decided for a gored skirt, it will still be over 5 metres wide at the hem. It didn't leave any fabric for sleeves either, but since I plan to make false sleeve from silk that isn't a problem. The good thing with the fulling is that now I don't have to line the skirt and that it's nice and cuddly and warm.
I cut the bodice yesterday, from the pattern for the green kirtle and lined it and started on the lacing holes. It will be laced in both sides, so there are quite a lot of them. Of course I didn't try it on first. This morning I did and discovered that it was five centimetres too big. I can't even blame bodice stretch since I hadn't worn it. I have just gotten smaller. It was too much to take in at the sides because that would distort the shape of the front and put the straps too far out on the shoulders compared to the corset I'm wearing under it, so I had to take it in in the centre front. So now I have a seam where I didn't intend to have one, but I guess it's not the end of the world.

armillary came over to watch film with me and since then I've been watching films, chatting, drinking tea and sewinglacing holes. They are now finished, so tomorrow I will start on the skirt.
I have a paper to read for tomorrow's seminar, otherwise I would work on it tonight, btutI may make a couple of fingerloop braids to use as laces.
Apart from that
armillary was a darling and watched Maja while I picked up Valeria and Vendela from the train so I didn't have to drag her along and I have got my cold back.
