So, hubby's old paned slops didn't fit anymore. Apparently he's put on some weight since 2001. It's both a disappointment and a relief. It would have been nice if he could have used them with a few alterations. On the other hand it's always less fun to have to change things than to start on something new. Also, my workmanship is much better now and I wasn't really happy with the way the seams were finished on the inside ;).
I'm planning to make him a pair of puffy pants like the ones on this picture. I have a lovely red wool for this. They don't appear to be paned, but just pleated. Maybe I could adapt the venetian's pattern from The Tudor Tailor or use the patterns on page 75 and 89 in Patterns of Fashion as a starting point. They're a little late, but seem to produce the right kind of look.
Does anybody know if non-paned "pants" of this type was used as early as the 1560s?
