Just so that you know, it's extremely hard to come up with a good title for one's dissertation.

Ohhhh I can empathise with that :(

The problem I had is that I was looking at a specific area, but not one that could be easily defined. The most accurate title would have run "A study of ... in the area that sort of, but not quite, corresponds to modern-day southern france, even though only half of it was so then". That, I felt, lacked panache.

Yes, lack of panache is a real problem for me too.

I can i“magine- I've always found it hard enough to come up with a title for papers.

I on the other hand have a fairly easy time with these things (titles easy, names hard). Let me know if you want to talk it over; I may be able to give you some inspiration or ideas.

Oh yeah! I kind of got around that: In order to put off the agony as long as possible, I kept bringing by drafts with all sorts of crazy placeholder titles. You should have seen some of the things that I had on mine for a while ("Insert title here" and "Something cool sounding about "). I'd been fully intending to think about something real closer to the date, but my advisor broke down first and suggested something. But maybe it's too late to embark on that approach...
