Denver fabrics are having a sale on their wool (among other things). Thankfully I don't need any more wool (or any fabric), because I don't have any money to spend. This would be lovely for viking and 10-12th century when herringbone and other twill variations were very common, though.

Got a question for you, and any of your readers who know the answer:

This wool is listed as 7.6 oz. I know that's weight per square yard, but what I really wish I could find was a listing of what weights are "tropical", "lightweight", etc. up through "coatweight" or heavier. I bought 10 yds of "coatweight" wool, at 14 oz., and it wasn't nearly the heavy stuff I thought it would be. It's lovely stuff, but I am glad I lined it with silk twill for the insulation or it wouldn't be usable as a winter coat for Katty. Certainly fine for a California winter coat, or a Texas winter coat, but not for somewhere that there is snow on the ground most of the winter.

Help? Anyone?

I hope someone else answers, because ounces and yards are quite beyond me.

Did you wash the coat-weight wool to full it up? I've gotten several heavy-weight wools which actually felt fairly light until I'd washed and dried them.

I'd think that this particular wool would be firmly in medium-weight territory. And if there were such a chart, I'd be a very happy camper.

oh, what lovely fabric (the masculine side of my brain is kicking me right now)

now, the question is, what would I make out of it? If I can figure that out, then I will gladly shell out for the required amount.

Poofy viking pants, like one this site (http://www.historiska.se/histvarld/eng/drakter/vherre/vherrefr.htm) maybe? They are best made in light wool fabrics. A guy I know have woven crepe fabric from hand spunb yarn fro pants like thise, based on Birka finds. We know very little about finnish viking age costume, but at least the poofy pants and caftan are eastern influences.
