We had a sewing meeting at my place yesterday, but only Anna came. That was just as well since Maja had been waking up every hour all night and both Rickard and I were totally exhausted. We tried to watch Pirates of the Caribbean while she made shoes (for me!!) and I cut a sleeveless surcoat for my murrey c. 1300 ensemble. You can see the cotte here if you haven't already, but I'm going to make two surcoats for it, one with sleeves and one without, a cloak and a hood. All from the same fabric and lined with white silk. The inspiration for this monochromatic ensemble is the trousseau of Isabella de Bruce from 1293 (for some reason the formatting of the document seems to be broken, it did not look like this before and I assume it will get fixed).
I didn't cut the lining, but I will probably do that today.
Maja slept better this night, but I'm still tired.

What colour is the surcoat to be, if you don't mind the question?

It's all going to be murrey. That's the funny thing, but Isabella had several outfits where all the garments were in the same colour. It is not uncommon in medieval wills either.

I remember seeing something similar in the Paston Letters. Do you think that it's the natural consequence of buying/making cloth in quantity, or do you think the decision may have been influenced by fashion?

Tha Paston letters are over a hundred years later than this example, and later than most of the wills too, so I don't know if one can compare them directly. But for Isabellas trousseau it must be afashion thing. She's going to marry the norwegian king and can probably get whatever clothes she fancies. She had several outfits ad I guess she could mix'n match them as well as wearing just one colour.

Eva, off to cut the silk lining
