Thanks everybody who has helped with finding pictures and with suggestions for the swedish dress from Dala Järna.

myralea's site which shows a dress with front pleats, a smooth, higher layer under it and clasps. Much smaller, but still.
I have written to the peron who took the photo I linked to and hopefully he has a larger image of the statue so I can see if there are any interesting carving lines. Apparently it has rests of red and blue paint, that would be interesting to see.

Date: 2006-04-01 07:51 am (UTC)If these statues are depicting the Virgin Mary, she was basically always wearing red and blue garbs throughout the Medieval times and the Renaissance. Blue represented her heavenly divinity, while red was her earthly love. There are a few exceptions to the rule, and then she's basically always seen in gold, as to show her glory (especially in Byzantine works).
