The actual dress is finished now, but I'm reworking the headwear. The yellow silk cap with a pleated edge that was worn under the black veil wasn't right. Well, it looks okay, gold pleated edges are very common on french hoods so I thought it was a good choice also for this type. But when I found a coloured sketch of Anne Cresacre I saw clearly that there was first a white coif with a pleated edge, then _maybe_ a gold coloured layer and then the black veil with gold billiments. The gold silk cap was too short compared to the veil too, it doesn't reach below my cheek bones. So it will be taken apart and the fabric used to make the yellow layer, which possibly will only be a piece of fabric, like how Sarah Goodman ([livejournal.com profile] sarahbellem) wore her french hood with her red silk taffeta dress.
I am currently working on the coif. I am making it from the pattern for a henrician coif in the Tudor tailor. I cut it from fine linen this morning and brought it with me when I went with Vendela to the riding school. I love small hand sewing projects. I have 10 cm of wire to attach and then I will turn the brim and sew it to the headband and finally sew a piece of lovely pleated cream silk-like ribbon (it's rayon) I got from [livejournal.com profile] clothsprogs last spring.

Ya'll are killing me. I just caved and ordered the book. Failing at adulthood today.

A while back, I was terrified of making a French hood. I don't know why, as I'd done them before. I ended up using Ninya's pattern off her site, and it was perfect.

All hail Ninya! I'm still waiting for my copy of the book--[livejournal.com profile] aeddie bought me one (voucher number 7 or 8) for Christmas, and it's still not here (see weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth) but I'm sure it will be astounding.

On a completely unrelated note, I was lured into buying myself roses last night at the supermarket, and almost bought some white ones with green touches--called Vendela. I thought of you. However, I succumbed to the ones with more scent, and left the Vendelas for someone else.

Isn't that ribbon *perfect* for this sort of thing?

I love the way it gripps thehead if you stretch the edge you sew to the coif a little as you are sewing it on.

It's absolutely perfect. You can see it in my icon. I don't have a bigger picture of the hood because I was wearing my nightie and had to crop it a lot not to show my grandmotherly style in sleepwear ;)
