My new 18th century stays
Sep. 2nd, 2006 11:09 pmToday was the first try-on of my new 18th century stays. I really like the way they turned out. I only need to make the armscyes a little bigger in the front and cut down the strap pieces in front. Then I need to bind it and make a stomacher.
I also need to add som horisontal reeds across the front pieces and a couple of reeds up on the shoulder straps in the back, to keep the back straight and the shoulder pulled back. But the channels for those are made with tape sewn by hand to the inside of the stays, so it won't be fixed for a few days.

The fabric is a linen/cotton grosgrain in strong pink and light green and the channels are machine stitched with a light green thread.
mynningsflamma,
chigrima and other swedish SCAdians maybe be interested to know that it's a left over spool of thread from when "the Monster", i.e. the shire of Gotvik's giant pavillion, was made back in 1993. It is boned with reeds and they seem to make a good job. They look fragile, but when the stays are fully boned they support each other. I'm not afraid of any major breakage.
