In ten minutes I, Vendela and Valeria and a couple of friends from work are going down to the main university building and nail my dissertation to the wall. Rickard is meeting us there.
Yep, that's right. We're keeping the old mediaeval tradition of nailing dissertations to a wall, the prejudice for Luther's nailing of his "theses" to a church wall.
At most universities this is replaced by an announcement on the university's web site, but Göteborg, Umeå, Luleå and Linköping still keep to the old ways.
Finally it's beginning to feel real.

Yay!

I meant to ask if you were going to be nailing, but forgot

Yay old traditions!

Uppsala does it as well, I saw the wall when I was there last year.

Congratulations!

Do you nail the book or each individual page to the wall?

The book. If it was each individual page, she'd still be at it.

Congratulations! In Linköping they nail the dissertations to a tree instead of a wall, but it's almost the same thing. I studied there for four years. Is there any way to buy a copy of the dissertation?

Allthough I have to point out, Borås also nail them to the wall....

I didn't know Borås was allowed to examine doctors.

I'm a bit unsure of that too. I think that they are in fact not allowed but have some kind of deal with Gothenburg University so people can do all their research and work in Borås and then get their formal doctor hat from GU. I do know for a fact that people are nailing thing to a plank in the entrance hall, so they got something going on...

Many congrats. I wish Irish universities did that. Rather, I wish I could nail mine to one of the trees behind Trinity's Campanille and not get into trouble for it....

What was your dissertation about?

The historical context of archaeologically-evident, large-scale change in Viking-controlled towns of Denmark, Norway, and Ireland (with York as well). My best case studies are two flood-layers, in Lund and Viborg, which look deliberate and date to the first few years of Sven Estridsen's reign; I put forward that there may have been a political motivation for the reorganisation of the towns.

But I do medieval clothing as a serious-research hobby. :o)

YAY! Congratulations on being done! I had never heard of this nailing it to the wall thing. That's neat. Have yourself a good rest now dearest. :)

Nailing Dissertation

Congratulation.

Wow. Nailing the dissertation to a wall. A neat image! But...

After going thru all the steps of my gf's dissertation (at University of Illinois), I have to wonder if a specific type and size (and even composition) of nail is required. Is a hole pre-drilled? Do the examining board just take it down, or do you still need to send them copies? Please, for the woefully ignorant Colonials, a little more of the mechanics. Thanks!

It is pre-drilled. My dissertation is hard-back and 382 pages, so I needed the help.
Anyway, I've celebrated it and I'm terribly drunk writing thie, I'll get back to you later.

Hi, random drop in here from the other side of the planet (friendoffriendoffriend through various LJs - [livejournal.com profile] pinkdiamond and [livejournal.com profile] pepperbeast I think). As we went to a university too modern to still have such a wonderful tradition, when my partner and I finished our respective phds, we loaded spare pages from them into a black powder cannon and shot them across the country side. It's very therapeutic for releasing thesis stress.

Congratulations and hope the party afterwards wasn't too hard on the head...grin. I wish we had such a tradition here but the Atlantic Veterinary College, where I did my thesis, is a really young university even by Canadaian standards.... no neat traditions.... ah well enjoy yours. You have earned it.

Cool tradition! And congratulations!!! I did mine the modern way, very boring. Makes me want to do it all over again, and this time with al the proper traditions. In the Netherlands one is entitled to two "paranimfen" which date back to the old days where a defence could really be a defence of one's thesis. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thesis under thesis defence, at the section on the Netherlands.

I had great fun doing my thesis, including the defence. I hope you have enjoyed and will enjoy it as much as I did!
