This is from a late 12th century manuscript in the British Library. Note the orange dress of the virgin. And all the other orange stuff.

When I've found orange lightweight 100% wool. I actually have orange/light green silk taffeta that will look , errhm, astonishing when made up to a 12th c dress, but I plan to make a fitted dress,a bliaut, from that.
Your comment made me think about it though and my favourite store has this lovely pale yellow wool tabby that I think will be possible to dye to a nice orange. I also have 10 metres of orange trim. It's an orange background and a pattern in fuchsia made by threads crossing each other on top of it. It will be nice, an orange dress with an even more orange trim.
