- Because I'm insane!
As I told you earlier I had plans to make a new high necked 16th century smock. A nice, short project, I guess it would take three days to sew it entirely by hand. But since I had been thinking a lot about making an embroidered jacket I had borrowed Historical fashion in detail by Avril Hart and Susan North from the library. Well, one thing led to the other and I have now undertaken a one-year project, to make an embroidered smock.
I mean, I don't have anything else to do, taking care of a new baby, making new medieval clothes for my big girls (and some for me that will make it possible to nurse), writing my dissertation etc etc.
But it's a nice project to bring to events and meetings because it doesn't take up much space or weigh much.

PS. The orignal was white and much brighter red 400 years ago.

What stitch are you using to do the embroidery? It was hard to tell from the pictures.

Just ordinary running stitch, doubled back, according to the book that's what they used on the original. That's one of the things that appealed to me. It's not difficult, just very time-consuming.

Yes I guess so, but I wasn't sure if you could use the term Holbein stitch for free embroidery.

Hmm, you may have a point there have no idea if there is a distinction. I just wanted to make sure I understood what you were describing. I am very bad at that.

Beautiful! You are SUCH an inspiration!

Thanks to you I am attempting to recreate the Bess of Hardwick gown almost exacttly! I have the fur (thanks to Ninya Mikhaila who kindly gave me an old white fur jacket. I need to work out what to do for the aiglets and I am hoping to do a silver couchwork embroidery down the front of the gown and on the sleeves like the original. And its all on black Silk/wool aleskine lined in black linen!

And of course, I would dearly love to make a smock with faggotted seams! On top of those lace projects - which I haven't managed to start yet cos I can't get the silk thread I want.

Totally mad!

We are all insane and I think its catching!

You really are quite irrevocably insane.

Yay!
