Because of Maja's birthday my mother-in-law is here over the weekend. And everything I and Rickard do is wrong, literally everything. And I don't even think she notices herself that she comments negatively on everything from what we eat for breakfast to when we go to bed. ALL THE TIME, she's never quiet.

I've been trying to work, but I quietly go insane. Must Not Talk Back!

DO talk back!!!
I once told my mother in law to keep quiet or leave, I told her that this was our life our home and that she had to respect that... and she did. I did it in a nice and civilized way of course.

I couldn't agree more.

(Except that I'm not a nice nor civilised person in these circumstances)

Isn't that the definition of the word "Mother in law" -- one who finds fault with everything you do?

Good luck, Eva. I would not be as kind as you are being.

Well, I guess it's an upside that she doesn't think that her son is perfect and I'm evil. Everything he does is wrong too.

That's one way to look at it. :/

Try to focus on Maya's birthday, I guess. I hope your weekend picks up.

{{Hugs}} I'm so sorry to hear that you're having a rough visit with her.

When my relatives do this same thing, I do a little constructive conversation, like "Well, this is what we eat for breakfast, what do you like?" Trying to draw them out into a more positive frame of mind, but some people don't have a positive bone left in their body!

If it gets really bad, I just tell them that this is the way we do things in this household, and that they can do things the way they want in their houses, but complaining about it isn't going to change how we do things.

My mother can be that way sometimes, and eventually I (politely) either tell her she's being very negative or grouchy, or I tell her her way doesn't work for me.Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But I feel better after I do it.

(hugs) It sucks, though.

Nope, we see her maybe twice a year. I guess it's a good measurement of annoying she is that I hardly can stand two days together twice a year.

Perhaps if you tell her what you think of her and her behviour this trip you can get that down to once a year or less...?
