The men they couldn't hang was/is a british band from the 80s (the have, however re-united) that not so many have heard of. I am, however, very fond of them, and the funny thing is that when Rickard and I were beginning to fall in love there was a discussion at a party about which records people had that no-one else they knew had. And I mentioned "The domino club" by them and it turned out that Rickard also had a record with them: "Silvertown" (which I think is the better of the two).
Well, you all know, how the story continued. And I lived on in the belief that no-one else we knew had any records of them. Well, I was very wrong; my friend and colleague Adam (who have so many interest in common with me that it's almost absurd) has several records of them and also keep track of what they're doing now. And yesterday he showed me this little gem on Youtube:

This is the song "Ghosts of Cable Street", which while it may not be the best of their songs (I think I like "Rosettes", about football hooliganism best, and maybe "Blackfriar's Bridge") it is original film material from the 1936 Battle of Cable Street where british union activists, communists, anarchists and members of the jewish community etc stopped british fascist leader Oswald Mosley and his blackshirts from marching through east London with it's large jewish population.

I sort of like them too, having only heard the (fairly recent) live cd in [livejournal.com profile] leobavorima's car while going to events with her. Barratt's privateer would be my favourite on that cd.

Which of their cds would you recommend me getting hold of? (I don't mind a cd swap if you want some of mine)

I think Pratchett references Cable Street in his Discworld novel Night Watch.

Nice song, reminds me of Billy Bragg.

Yup.

There was barricades and everything at Cable Street in Ank Morpork when Sam Vimes was a young man and new as a copper.

( I just read it for the second time).

P has "Silvertown" (on CD!), and apparently bought it after hearing it in Rickard's appartement.
