I've taken pictures of the finished sleeve and pilgrim's bag. If you look at the sleeve you can see that my skin is visible through the buttonholes. I don't like that, but it's caused by the shanks of the cloth buttons being much bigger than metal shanks and I don't know what to do about that. Probably just another thing I'll have to accept. And it will be the skin that is visible, because the sleeve is too tight to wear a shift under the buttoned part. At least the lower part, so I will have to push up the sleeve of my shift a little and wear the wool directly on my skin. It will itch, since this is rather itchy wool, but I have stockings from this wool so I know I will get used to it.

Is the sleeve lined? If it isn't, it may stretch a wee bit. A new shift (never enough shifts, anyway) out of very lightweight stuff with very slimfitting sleeves (just enough to push your hands through) may be the answer.

Are the buttonholes any larger than they need to be? If so, you can take a stitch or two to snug them up.

Or last option--keep your arms moving and no one will notice.

I'll try stitching the buttonholes more closed. It should work, especially since only the five lowest buttons really need to be opend when I put on the dress.

You could sew a strip of fine white cloth behind the buttonholes so that it shows through and looks like a shift (perhaps a strip around the wrist too so it looks like you have shift sleeves underneath).

It does look lovely however, and I don't think anyone but you will notice that there is something (skin, shift, whatever) showuing through from behind the buttonholes.

I certainly didn't think about it until I read the rest of the message. I just thought it looked very elegant.
