We just had a short reflection on the effort made by Morgoth (I suppose it was Morgoth and not Sauron) to invent a language who's main purpose was to be ugly, reaching the conclusion that it of course helps to be really, really evil and have lots of time.

The alternative would be to have the orcs all speak Elven. And we really, *really* can't have that.

Never underestimate language as a unifying factor... :)

Anyway, it was Sauron, if it's the Black Speech you are referring to. And he probably didn't design it to be ugly -- he just wasn't very good at making languages, and the people who spoke it didn't exactly make it prettier... ^^

Tolkien, however, did design Black Speech to be really ugly. But he didn't really spend a lot of time on it. There are only about thirty extant words in the Black Speech, as devised by the Professor himself.

Oh my. Are you really sure you're not interested in joining the Forodrim?

At our concert a week ago we recited the verse on the one ring in the original tongue. At first only as a whisper, but in the end we were screaming and wailing and sounded like banshees. But the audience liked it.
