Right now I feel fattest in the world. A friend of mine wrote a post in her blog about the ongoing controversy (at least in Sweden) about Gwyneth Paltrow starving herself to loose 20 kilos after her pregnancy. I use the word starving here since she has said in interviews that she cried herself to sleep from hunger.
Anyway, my friend stated that it wasn't weird to want to loose 20 kilos of overweight - of course she would want to, implying that Gwyneth was really fat before she lost them But it wasn't 20 kilos of overweight, it was 20 kilos more than her normal, very low weight. I assume that Gwyneth, who's a little taller than me weighs 50-55 kilos. That means that 20 kilos more would mean that a) she's still in the healthy range of the BMI scale and b) she weighs less than I do; which in turns leads to obvious the conclusion that I am really, really too fat.
So forget about loosing 5 kilos and enter the "normal BMI range", I really need to loose twenty kilos, otherwise I'm fat.

This is not improving my mood, which wasn't to good to begin with, with menstrual cramps.

You're not fat.

Hollywod has a fucked up idea of what normal women look like. As far as I can tell, if you can't count your ribs then Hollywood counts you as obese. So women starve themselves to the extent they're crying themselves to sleep then stick plastic tits on the front to make up for the curves that they would have had if only they had a passing acquaintance with cheese.

It's madness.

With my weird ribcage, which widens a lot at the bottom you can almost count my ribs now *giggle*

Heh.

Does it help if I tell you that if you look at the official figures then I'm overweight? Which is bloody silly, frankly, but there you go.

yeah the "official figures" Im "obese" and had my new doctor throwing that word around like it was dirty language. But all my tests came back healthy (no high cholestoral for me) and I have a string of guys that constantly tell me how sexy I am (even when I weigh more than I do now).

I just cant follow the normal BMI due to my boobs. I look like a barbie doll at the "normal" weight.

Gwyneth Paltrow is Gwyneth Paltrow, with Gwyneth Paltrow's skeleton and bone structure and musculature and basic framework. You are you, with your own infrastructure, which apart from everything overlying it, is fundamentally different from hers. Comparing yourself to her is not terribly constructive. (For one thing, you have fabulous tits. She doesn't have any at all.)

Smaller is not better. This is an artificial aesthetic imposed by mass-produced fashion, among other things. Clothes that are not custom-tailored fit better if you have little to no curve in your body.
You are free from that constraint because you are such a wonderful seamstress. You do not have to be smaller in order to dress well. In fact the curvier you are, the more you can show off your seamstressing skills, because as I've been finding out this summer in my attempts to clothe myself, it is damn hard to tailor clothing properly to a very curvy body.

Being healthy, mentally and physically, is more important than being smaller. A woman's highest aspiration should not be to take up less space.

And I just had a long conversation with a medical researcher (who is an Internet acquaintance; the conversation began because I wrote about being interviewed by a reporter about the Fat Acceptance (http://kateharding.net/but-dont-you-realize-fat-is-unhealthy/) movement) who started off by saying "But it's true there's an obesity epidemic!" but immediately followed it up by saying, "but the problem is not the fat on people's asses, it's the fat around their organs. And you can't see that from the outside. Viibly thin people who eat poorly are just as likely to have this problem as visibly fat people who eat poorly."

So there's no medical reason to want to be smaller. Starving yourself strains your heart and even depletes brain tissue, and can lead to longer-term metabolic damage that will cause weight gain later.

The only reason to want to be smaller is aesthetic. Why suffer *so much* for aesthetics? Gwyneth has the motivation of a paycheck to cry herself to sleep at night-- if she is not Hollywood Skinny Perfect, she won't have a job.
You don't have that motivation: you make your living from your brain, and dieting will only hurt your powers of concentration, your emotional stability, and your ability to think.
So why torture yourself?
You are beautiful as you are. You have such an amazing fashion sense and you truly do rock the body you have. Why change it? Don't change it.

I hope that helps your mood. At any rate, it's my honest feelings on the topic, for whatever that's worth.

Kill your friend and blame someone else who has upset you and get rid of both of them in one operation...?

Oh no, it's not her fault and I actually don't think she thinks I am fat, it was the conclusions I made from the whole thing.

Gwyneth Paltrow wouldn't know what starving meant if it bit her on her bony ass!

And she has a tendency to "cry" at the drop of a hat (witness her oscar or golden globe thingy a few years back).

Don't try to compare yourself with her. She is not "normal" (whatever that is supposed to mean anyway! After all, what is "normal". There really isn't anything "normal" about anyone. If there was, we'd all be clones!).

Apart from agreeing with everyone else here (stupid body fashions, humans are not supposed to look human, bloody daft if you ask me...), I have only this to add:

At 63ishKG and 5'6-7 (it really depends on who is measuring) most people think I weigh less than I do (by up to 5 kilos). I would assume your friend was doing the same thing by not being aware of her math and how it really doesn't match up with reality.

Well I would hope. ANyone who thinks that Gwenneth really needed to lose that weight has large issues with body image- either their own or for others.

Remember that the BMI is not perfect. I have to adjust it 20 pounds because of my boobs. When I weighed the 155 its says is healthy for me I looked like a skeleton with big boobs.

And Gwyneth Paltrow has never been fat. She has always been too skinny. I forsee her not living to be an old lady due to health problems.

Working at a eating disorder clinic has reinforced my ideas that skinny is just not healthy. Some of the girls that come into the clinic, were probably once beautiful. Now they are just anxious skeletons determined to lose more weight despite the fact that they know its probably going to kill them.

And you are most definately not fat. Your probably one of the sexiest people on my friends list.
