My husband has gone and deleted some files that were really dear to me. I know that theoretically they aren't gone, but is there any way to retrieve them?

I'm assuming you have checked the recycle bin? (assuming you have one).

Do you have XP? If so, then use the roll back option to a day when you KNOW the data was present. WARNING anything you have worked on AFTER the data was deleted will not be there. So back up the system.

If this doesn't work or you don't have a roll back option, then my best advice would be to find a professional who has the software/expertise to pull "deleted" data back. It is possible to do so but its specialised.

If you do have the roll back/XP option, feel free to contact me direct for advice. I have used it before to get back stuff I have lost.

If you are using Windows, open your recycle bin, select the files in question, right click and select restore. This works if your recycle bin is set to hold a certain amount of files (the default is 10% of your hard drive volume). I'm not sure what the equivalent operation is on a mac, but I recall it's very similar, unless they've changed things..

Unfortunately they're not in the recycle bin.

You are right in saying it isn't gone - the delete function doesn't erase the files, it simply sets a flag that frees the space to be overwritten with other data.

The data can be recovered by a specialist lab using a tool such as EnCase Forensic. However this is will be expensive - how badly do you want to recover the files?

You should also bear in mind that, while you use the computer, there is an increasing risk that you will overwrite the files.

I was afraid that was the case.
I don't want them that badly I thnik, especially not with our financial situation beign as it is. I think I will ahve to settle with being grumpy for a few days.

Eva - do you have XP? If so, you can do a roll back to recover lost files. Contact me direct for more info.

Do you have AIM messenger service? I could explain it better through that.

Hubby looked around and couldn't find it. But then we have the programme in swedish %&¤#! really, really anoying most of the time, since you usually know the english term for something and have to try to figure out what it would be called in swedish.

If I'm not mistaken it's called "återställningspunkt" in Swedish, or at least something smilar. I belive you can find it under "kontrollpanelen"

Hi. Dave from India here. It's late, and I'm bored, so maybe this might help. First, did you ever run the Backup Utility? If so, do you have copies of said files in other locations? If so, transferring should be easy. You can use the "Search" feature to hunt for them if you have back ups.

To run a System Restore (Which I think is what Bess is talking about here) you would go to "Start" --> "Programs" --> "Accessories" --> "System Tools" and then "System Restore". I am not sure that would get your files back though since System Restore doesn't generally cover any files of any type stored in My Documents, Favourites, Cookies, Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files, History, or Temp.

Of course, if Bess has been successful, I say go for it. A System Restore is undoable, after all.

Good luck.

No back-up.
My husband was of the same ipinion as uyou, that a system restore won't help. I guess we'll just have to face that The Best Erotic Photos Of Me Ever are loss and gone.

Wow. Deja vu.

The last person who I helped face that very same issue called me every name in the book, and then wrote a few more in it. I heartily applaud and appreciate your restraint.

Without a backup, the files are probably lost to you forever, unless you want to go for very pricy (and non-private) data recovery services along the lines of what Edmundclotworthy mentioned.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Who would've thought it was such a common problem? :)
I think what really got to me was that I took them only last week, if they had been older I would probably not have been so enamoured with them. And I'm upset that hubby never really got to look at them, since computer time without kids areound is scarce here.
Well, it's his loss.

When you do over the phone technical support for people around the world for any length of time, you find out that some problems keep coming up with more regularity than others. :-)

My condolences for your loss.
