Actually, general LJ formality levels considered, I'd probably be a 'je' to you, instead of an 'U'. Still, I only speak IKEA so I have nothing to gripe about really:)

Wondering now, does Swedish have a more and less formal 'you' or is it like English in that everyone is a 'you'?

We have a more formal "you", but we never use it.

Interesting. In Belgium and Germany, they use it for almost everyone, while here it's on its way out, I think. It's mostly used for older people and very formal situations like job interviews and even then there's a 50% chance they'll tell you to use 'je'. Or loudly complain they're not old enough to warrant the formal version:)

It was over fifteen years since I studied any dutch, so it's not strange that what I remember is old-fashioned and formal.

Oh I'm not bashing your Dutch, just explaining. I'm pretty impressed anyone would want to learn Dutch at all.

I dind't think you were, just giving an explanation. I've also had a flemish boyfriend, which probably affects my dutch too.

The Flemish are extremely formal compared to the Dutch. Of course, they'd argue we're just incredibly rude. And they kick our butt in language games on a regular basis, but that's neither here nor there.
