Totally crazy

Just to prove that I'm totally and utterly crazy I wove a gefrens tonight. I made it by inserting extra pieces of silk yarn with the weft when tablet weaving to create a fringe. I't far from perfect, but I made it in a few hours and I have one of I need it at the event. I would have liked it to be a brighter red and somewhat thicker, but at least the silk yarn is dyed with madder (by me and haugtussa) and it's nice as a first try.



I am also working on a sort of headband with small pearls (plastic - so sue me!) that I also started today.

German late 15th - early 16th century. You wore it hanging at the neck. Yes, it's weird.

No, just a fringe hanging at the back of the neck. mmcnealy has written about them and has pictures in her journal, tag "gefrens".

When I first saw the picture, I thought it was one of those bronze age fringe skirts!! Hahahah. "My goodness, but Eva's a brave girl!"...I thought to myself. Heeheehee.

That was my first reaction as well!
Followed almost immediately by: some horses wear those over their eyes.
