frualeydis: (18th century)

I am currently reading The dress of the people - Everyday fashion in eighteenth century England by historian John Styles (2007); and what wonderful, well researched book it is! Apart from being very interesting it also gives me an urge to sew: I would very much like a gown from a cotton "Flowerd all over with cards", as it is described in the notes in the London foundling hospitals "billet books". Finding the fabric seems unlikely though.

I agree. I bought myself a copy a few months ago and find myself returning to read chapters again and agina. I want a gown made from cotton with purple flowers and stripes.

It is a fantastic book. I saw John Styles speak at conference, he seems very dedicated to his subject and put in many hours of research.
