Why?

Today I'm not writing, but instead going through records from the magistrate in the swedish town Arboga in the 16th century. It's mostly fornication, violence and incredibly boring stuff about sale of properties. I'm looking for things about clothes and fabric of course. I find some, but the lasting effect is questions like "why would anyone climb over someone's roof, into his yard, kill his pig and then dump it in the river?"

Because alcohol makes everything seem like a good idea at the time?

I think it was more some kind of revenge/feud thing, it was considered a rather serious crime.

I'd buy that interpretation too. Do the two litigants show up in earlier cases against each other?

I was being a bit facetious in my earlier comment but one of my next door neighbours fully embraced the alcohol fueled "good idea at the time" concept. He had several run-ins with the law and eventually did time for second degree murder. Never underestimate the power of drink as a force for social change is all I'm saying.

Interesting.

That someone probably felt he had to pay someone back for something that had been done in the past.

A friend of mine who did police reords-stuff found one case about a woman who got hitched for causing disturbances walking around in men's clothes, but that was sometime between 1797 and 1802.

Can you somehow find the reference? I'm very interested.

I can ask her (and find out if she plans to use it for something) :)
