We're back from the event and it was really nice. The weather was wonderful and though I didn't get to hear them I'm sure the lectures were really interesting. I spent msot of the time with Maja and sometimes Valeria, but I managed to give my lecture and to finish Maja's 12th century dress. Valeria's was finished a week a go and is remade from one of my old early 14th century sleeved surcoats and I wore a really old woollen dress in a colour I adore. I think we represent our different ages in a reasonable way: Maja's dress is luxurious, but not laced, Valeria is wearing a laced highly fashionable gown and I'm wearing a dress with a looser fit and without the hanging sleeps, looking a bit more matronly. The current king and queen are doing 12th century so that's why I wanted us to all wear clothes from that period for the banquet.
Anyway, I'll write more later, here's the photo, taken by [livejournal.com profile] jehanearbonne:

That is a beautiful picture! The colours help bring each other out. And, you all look like you put on clothing as opposed to dressed up.

Valeria looks gorgeous in that. That's the figure of a 12th Century lady :)

I think you pulled off the variety very well. You all look right and appropriate. But you always do.

I know, it shouldn't be any trouble getting marrying her off ;)

Lovely!

Valeria's lacings are on the sides, right?

Yes, it's the only position we have any proof of.

I may have a gown I can try this on. :)

OTOH - I may have gained enough weight over the years that it now fits too tightly for it. :(

If it's not too tight it really is one of the more forgiving styles, since you can leave the lacing open an inch or so and it still looks good.

You all look so beautiful! I really like the colored veil. I'm only used to seeing white - I'll have to pay more attention to the illustrations in the future!

The coloured veils (mostly) disappear after the 12th century, though saffron coloured veils are mentioned in german sources from the 13th century.

Argh! Circlets!
Sorry, I'm better now...........
: )
Excellent costuming. I love it when people put in side lacing for female costuming.

You all look beautiful.

What's wrong with circlets? People had them in the 12th century - look in "Mediaeval Jewellery" by Ronald Lightbown. And in the 13th and 14th centuries as can be seen in quite a few manuscripts.

I knew you would say that.
: )

I don't know that much about the late 13th onwards but in the documentation that I've seen, you don't really see circlets. The Maciejowski Bible only shows Princesses wearing them (and they are without veils), so that could be more of a symbol of social status.

That book looks truly awesome. If I had a spare US$1000, I might buy it and I doubt the local library will buy it for me (the buggers).

As always, I love to be proved wrong.
: )
