Do you sew the boning tapes to the outside fabric? Or are those just to cover the seams and look pretty? :)
Hunnisett (the only source I have right now) doesn't say anything about lining, but since all pictures I've seen of extant corsets have shown them with lining, I thought the channels were to go on the inside, between the layers. But I'm not sure about that.
I'm sewing the boning channels on the outside - I know I've seen that in some extant examples, though it appears to be much more common to have the channels on the inside. But I plan to have a lining too.
I think I've seen some examples, too. And it looks very pretty like that!
I've got a red-and-white narrow striped pillow ticking kind of fabric (cotton) that I'm thinking of using, and I think it would just look strange with channels on the outside; unless I found tape in the exact same red, of course. Actually, that would save me from trying to make all the stripes match up...
If one can sew straight, it can look very cool to have boning channels on the outside for effect.
I'm lazy, I flatline my corsets (If there are more than one layer) and use boning tape, or sometimes just press the sewing allowance to one side and stitch down, if it's just a hurry up fun piece. Then they are easy to alter if I didn't get the fit quite right.
I might make a new corset someday. I have this chinese red brocade...
