* I'm working on the 16th century swedish gown (not particularly swedish, since we wore german fashions, but the inspiration is swedish), it's coming along nicely, mainly hand sewing decorative borders to the velvet.

* I am working on The Bloody Article. It goes too slowly, but at least something is happening.

* I'm back at work, which is kind of nice.

* I'm still sad about loosing a friend, but I know it will get easier with time. Or at least I hope so.

* I have sewing plans for the next "Tip the Velvet" which include my other fake zebra fur, this time only in purple.

* Was out for a few beers with an old friend who was visiting Göteborg yesterday, which was nice.

I'm sorry to hear that you lost a friend and I do hope things get easier in time. You have my condolences.

You guys wore German stuff back then? Interesting. Forgive me if this is a silly question but what influence did places like Russia and Poland have?

Hmm, not loosing as in the person died, but loosing as in having a break-up due to misunderstandings and things said that can't be taken back etc.

The russian influence was very slight, and had been since the middle ages, divided by relgiion. Poland was, on the other hand for a while in the 16th century very closely allied to Sweden and you do find items like "polish gowns" in invetories. This you also find in other European countries at the time and seem to refer to oriental-looking long gowns with froggings as decoration.

Interesting. I think I remember reading somewhere that Russian boyars in Ivan the Terrible's time wore Polish style gowns (or at least something similar), so I was curious if Sweden had been influenced by either power, especially since the climate of all three countries has some similarities.

I didn't realize Poland and Sweden allied in the 16th century. Considering the differences in religion (I think Sweden went Protestant fairly early but hey, if I'm wrong on that, I'm wrong and bow to your superior knowledge) was that to keep Russians, Danes or Germans in check, or due to a political marriage?

Finally, just have to say I've seen some of the Polish gowns and I have to say I like the look. I'd wear them.

The difference in religion was a problem and the main reason why Sigismund, the son of king Johan III never got to be king of Sweden, they were afraid that he would turn Swedne catholic again, especially since his father had some leanings in that way. So instead of being king of both Sweden and Poland he just became king of Poland.

I'm going to have to read more stuff on Swedish history. I must confess that my knowledge of Sweden is as follows:

Dark Ages - Vikings leave Sweden, terrorize Northern Europe
Baroque Era - Queen Christina leaves Sweden, terrorizes Rome
Early 18th Century - Charles ? leaves Sweden, terrorizes Russia
19th Century - Alfred Nobel invents dynamite, terrorizes everyone
Late 20th Century - Swedish hockey players invade North America, terrorize Canada

To many gaps in my knowledge there, I think. I will have to rectify that.

I'm thinking more in the line of a 40s-inspired figure skating-esque dress. And a little cap with ears.

I haven't commented on the loss of a friend because your current situation has brought back vivid memories of things said which cannot be unsaid for myself as well. My heart hurts for you, and I hope all will be as well as can be expected.

Your burgundy gown is exceedingly lovely. I am inspired by your corset-making, too!

Loosing friends can be heartbreaking, it is a relationship that ends, and even if one were "just" friends, a lot of emotion, love and time have been invested. It's heartache and I feel very sorry for you.

*hugs*
