A new dress
Aug. 31st, 2010 05:21 pmAfter the medieval week I wanted to sew something "normal" again. I also wanted to make something from the dark blue seersucker I bought at the fair in Nossebro in July - and last, but not least, to try this pattern which I bought from Patterns From the Past, because I wanted the bodice and collar pattern. Even if it's from the 1970s so much of the fashion in those days were inspired by then 1940s that I thought that it would be useful to make dresses inspired by the 1940s.

After making a mock-up I did the following alterations:
* Making the shoulders much narrower - you don't automatically get linebacker shoulders from having a large bust or even a large ribcage.
* Made the bust gore wider - commercial patterns are made for a B-cup, while I have an F-cup. This means that even if the width is enough (actually a little too wide) over the bust it is shaped in the wrong way and makes the bust pull the armscye forward. It also makes you look larger than you are.
* Lengthening the front bodice, since a large bust takes up space also in this direction.
* Taken the pattern in a little at the sides.

I also made short sleeves and decided to leave out the zipper in the back - it's possible to get in and out of it anyway, though it can affect one's hairdo. Thus the back piece and collar are made in piece, not two. I also shortened the skirt, since I'm not that tall.
I had enoght seersucker for the skirt and bodice, but not for sleeves. This wasn't a problem since I wanted to have it in two different colours anyway, I'm going to make another dress from dark blue viscose and I don't think that I need two dark blue thin dresses. The sleeves, collar and facing are made from pink linen, which I already had.

I also added a little button and loop so that I can wear the dress with the collar closed too:
